Vintage Mexican Flavor

I'm excited to introduce Threadesque's first guest blogger, Amber Pierce-Schulz . She has been living in Mexico for 8 years and is the owner of Mayan Riviera Properties, which offers Vacation Rentals and Real Estate in Puerto Morelos.  She also authors The Puerto Morelos Blog; chatting about her town, local news, and her love of all-things-Mexico. She has a beautiful home in Mexico full of Mexican art, antiques & architecture. Enjoy reading and don't forget to check out her websites!

When Sam contacted me about becoming a guest blogger on Threadesque, my first thought and response was a resounding “YES”!  My second thought was “Oh my gosh, what the heck to I write?!?”

Afterall, I am not much of a clotheshorse – so me talking fashion is a bit like an Eskimo talking palm trees.

But…I am a huge fan of Vintage and Classic Mexican Design!

Fortunately, I live in Puerto Morelos, Mexico and have been able to fully plunge into my love for Mexican Folkart, Hacienda Furniture, and Vintage Mexican Fabrics.  If we ever leave this magical place, there are good odds that our new digs will not be chock full of Hacienda-Style Architecture to fill with my found-and-bartered gems.  But, Mexico and I can’t possibly part ways.  So, I am committed to finding ways to sneak my favorite elements into a more traditionally designed home.

I hope that the following ideas inspire you to find a little piece of Mexico in your own home!  It certainly gave me some great ideas!

My first challenge would be to incorporate traditional Mexican Talavera Tile in my kitchen.  I think these are great examples!

Then, I'd have to start putting my folkart collection here and there.

THE CLASSIC CATRINAS BY THE MASTER JUAN TORRES.
I HAVE A GROUP OF THESE LOVELY LADIES.  HOPEFULLY THEY DON'T FREAK

THESE LOVELY POTS ARE CALLED COCUCHAS & ARE FROM THE HEART
OF MICHOACAN, MEXICO.  I HAVE QUITE A FEW.  BUT, I THINK I CAN
EASILY FIND THEM A HOME IN OUR CASA!  GREAT POTS
LOOK GOOD ANYWHERE!

PINEAPPLES ARE THE INTERNATIONAL SYMBOL OF WELCOME.

Finally, I have lots of fabrics that I have collected here and there.  Some are quite large and others are small pieces of exquisite handiwork.  Many are calling out to be pillows and table runners.  Others might find their way into our home in more creative ways...

THIS HEADBOARD IS CREATED FROM A LARGE PIECE OF EMBROIDERY
WORK FROM THE OTOMI INDIANS.  I HAVE A HUGE PIECE, IN GREEN, THAT I
HAD ORIGINALLY PURCHASED WITH THE IDEA OF
MAKING A BEDSPREAD.  HOWEVER, THIS IDEA TOTALLY ROCKS!

I HAVE ALSO FALLEN FOR THIS LAMPSHADE.
NOT ALL OF MY SMALLER PIECES WILL BE TABLE RUNNERS!!

So what do you think?  Have any of these Classic Mexican Design pieces surprised you or peaked your fancy??  As a warning:  Collecting Mexican pieces is quite addicting.  Consider yourself warned!
